Rail-Trail dedication highlights National Trails Day®

Another 1.25-mile section of former railroad bed becomes part of the Georgia Coast Rail-Trail on June 4, in celebration of American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day®.

The new segment stretches south to the historic Liza Rudolph community from the 1.5-mile paved trail in the city of Woodbine in Camden County. It will remain unpaved for now, but its natural surface makes it easy to use for both hikers and cyclists. The paved Woodbine trail was completed several years ago and will become a part of the Georgia Coast Rail-Trail the same day.

When added to the 3.5-mile section of the trail opened just two miles north of Woodbine at White Oak last June, these additions bring the total length of the trail open to the public to 6.25 miles – almost 10 percent of the planned 68-mile four-county trail.

Come celebrate the opening Saturday, June 4, at the 10 a.m. dedication. Children ages 5-12 will have the opportunity to enter the National Trails Day coloring contest. A Trek Navigator 1.0 bicycle will be presented to the winner of the spring raffle. Bottled water will be provided free to attendees.

The Georgia Coast Rail-Trail is being built on an abandoned CSX railroad bed running from Kingsland to Riceboro. The 10-foot-wide trail will run across marshes, maritime forests, and 43 rivers and creeks in Camden, Glynn, McIntosh, and Liberty counties.

Thanks to the Woodbine, Ga., city council, a 1.25-mile extension of the CSX railroad bed south of the city will be opened up to hikers and mountain bikers in late spring.

Coastal Georgia Rails to Trails is now cooperating with the city in posting Georgia Coast Rail-Trail signs on the extension, as well as on the 1.5-mile concrete trail built by the City of Woodbine several years ago.

“This new section of the trail is easily accessible by hikers and mountain bikers already,” said Terry Landreth, Camden County chairman of Coastal Georgia Rails to Trails. “It consists of a good, solid railroad bed covered in a natural surface and extends from the south end of the paved trail in Woodbine down to the historic community of Liza Rudolph.”

Mayor Steve Parrott, newly elected to the board of Coastal Georgia Rails to Trails, says Woodbine has plans for a trail head in the heart of the city.

When added to the 3.5-mile section of the trail opened just two miles north of Woodbine at White Oak last June, these additions will bring the total length of the trail open to the public to 6.25 miles. That’s almost 10 percent of the planned 68-mile four-county trail.

Plans call for a grand opening of the extension on National Trails Day, which this year falls on Saturday, June 4.
